Which schools can offer statutory ECT induction overseas?

Statutory ECT induction overseas is available exclusively to eligible British international schools.

To offer induction, a school must:

  • Have successfully completed a Department for Education-recognised BSO inspection within the previous six years

  • Have met all of the required BSO standards at its most recent inspection

  • Hold full membership of at least one Department for Education-recognised association

  • Work with an appropriate Department for Education-appointed Appropriate Body

  • Provide each ECT with a compliant programme of induction, training, mentoring and statutory entitlements

The recognised associations are:

  • Association of British Schools Overseas (AoBSO)

  • British Schools in the Middle East (BSME)

  • Council of British International Schools (COBIS)

  • Federation of British International Schools in Asia (FOBISIA)

  • Independent Association of Prep Schools (IAPS)

  • Latin American Heads Conference (LAHC)

  • National Association of British Schools in Spain (NABSS)

A school must meet all the eligibility requirements throughout the period in which it is delivering statutory induction.

International schools that do not meet these criteria cannot offer Department for Education-certified statutory ECT induction.

UK Government certified induction overseas

The ability to deliver statutory ECT induction is an exclusive benefit of eligible BSO accreditation.

Early Career Teachers can complete their induction overseas without having to return to England. Following successful completion, ESP makes the final induction decision and reports the outcome to the Department for Education and Teaching Regulation Agency.

Completion is then:

  • Recorded on the teacher’s personal Department for Education record

  • Recognised by schools across England

  • Recognised by British international schools worldwide

  • Supported by official certification through the UK Government

This enables BSO schools to recruit and retain talented ECTs while providing a recognised professional pathway comparable to that available in England.

What does statutory induction include?

ECT induction is normally completed over two academic years and combines a structured programme of professional development with mentoring, support and assessment.

Schools must provide each ECT with their full statutory entitlements, including:

  • An appropriate programme of training based on the Initial Teacher Training and Early Career Framework

  • A dedicated ECT mentor

  • Regular mentor meetings

  • A reduced teaching timetable in addition to normal planning, preparation and assessment time

  • Regular lesson observations and professional feedback

  • Opportunities to observe experienced practitioners

  • Progress reviews and formal assessments

  • Support from a named induction tutor

  • Access to an independent Appropriate Body throughout induction

The training programme supports the ECT’s professional development, while formal assessment considers whether the ECT is making satisfactory progress towards meeting the Teachers’ Standards.

Every registered school completes an annual fidelity and compliance check. ESP may also undertake targeted meetings or quality-assurance visits where further support or assurance is required.
